The heart is a muscle in the body that pumps
BLOOD around the body VEINS and arteries.
In an adult person, the heart goes on working
at between 70 and 80 beats a minute until
death. It was the English doctor William
Harvey (1578-1657) who discovered how the
heart works. The heart is the same size as a
clenched fist and is made of cardiac muscle.
The heart carries OXYGEN from the lungs and
energy from the food we eat. Veins carry away
waste products and return the used dark blood
to the heart to be "recharged" with oxygen
from the lungs. When the heart stops beating,
the body is starved of oxygen and then
quickly dies. Doctors can sometimes massage
the heart back to life. People with heart
desease can have a heart bypass or infact a
complete new heart, transplanted from someone
who has recently died.
